Advancements - Star Rank - Payton Smith, Life Rank - Jason Swatsworth

Scoutmaster's Minute - As the new Scoutmaster for Troop 29, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Don Shick for five great years of service to Troop 29 as Scoutmaster. His dedication and sacrifice have not been overlooked. Just a few of his accomplishments include: working to make the Troop boy-run, implementing a number of  new activities and programs, as well as assisting thirteen Scouts earn the rank of Eagle. Not bad Don! Thanks for setting the bar so high for the next guy! Fortunately, Don is not leaving the troop - he will be staying on to work with the new Scouts that will be bridging in and more importantly, keeping me straight.  I think he may have more work than he did before.  If you would, give Don a pat on the back when you see him.  He would never ask for it, but he deserves one none the less.

I would also like thank all the leaders, committee members and helpful parents that are part of this Troop. This program doesn't work without all of you.  I'm looking forward to working with all you and I'm excited about what's on the horizon for Troop 29.

 Thanks, Rob

Last but Not Least :   A big THANKS to Ivan and Justin Querry for helping out a fellow Scouter not to mention a fellow Troop 29er.  I was pulled off the road with a flat tire when Ivan and Justin happened by.  They stopped and in no time we had the tire changed and I was on my way.  This reminded me of what Scouting is all about – helping others! I have no doubt that they would have stopped regardless of who was broken down by the road - it just happened to be me.  Thanks again fellows and thanks for setting the example for all of us to follow!  –  Rob Snyder

Advancements:  Tenderfoot  – Ben Snyder

Overlooked:  Our apologies go out to Ruth Berry for omitting her name from the last newsletter.  Ruth received her 30 year pin at the District Dinner for her years of service in scouting.  The reality is that Ruth has over 40 years of service  to this worthwhile cause..  Thanks to Ruth and again our apologies for the oversight.

Troop Elections:  The troop elections will be held at the August 10th meeting. If you need a leadership position for rank advancement, please be at this meeting.

Troop Sweatshirts:  Mr. Rougeux has a few extra Troop 29 sweatshirts. If interested see Joe.

Family Picnic / Court of Honor:  August 16th at the Shelocta Sportsman’s Club.  We will eat at 5:00PM with the Court of Honor immediately following.  The troop will provide hot dogs, hamburgers, buns, condiments, plates, cups, plasticware, and napkins.  We are asking families to bring a covered side dish, salad, or dessert to share.  We will also be conducting the popcorn kickoff and dunk tank sign-ups.  Please make every effort to be there.

Summer Camp: Well the weather was better fit for a duck but the boys still had a good time.  Besides, it just wouldn’t be a Troop 29 function without some rain. We had 23 boys attend summer camp with 83 merit badges earned.  There are some partials the boys will be finishing up in the near future.  Thanks to Don Shick, Keith Peterson, Rob Snyder, Dave Wissinger, Mark Swatsworth, Scott Barclay and Lee Glasser for leadership for the week. Also, thanks to Adam Peterson and Rob for providing fire wood.  A special thanks to all that helped set up the campsite prior to the troop’s arrival.  Even though the weather didn’t cooperate, it was another successful and fun year at camp for Troop 29.

Rickett’s Glen Campout:  Just imagine – it rained on another Troop 29 campout.  Well it only rained the trip out and for camp set up.  The weather couldn’t been better for the hike on Saturday to see the incredible scenery the falls trails had to offer.  I think that everyone who attended this outing will agree that we want to return to Rickett’s Glenn State Park again. Thanks to Dave Smith and Rob for organizing this outing.  A big thanks go out to Mike and Justin for handling the food/menus.  We ate very well on this trip (as always!)  Also thanks to the leaders and all who transported.

Campout with Troop 217:  We will be doing a campout in Johnstown with Troop 217. This will probably go down as the “Cheese and Quackers” campout.  This is just for fun and fellowship with our friends from Troop 217.  Permission slip attached and more details to come.

Laurel Highlands Trek:  Mitchell Walker and his father, Eric, participated in the Laurel Highlands Trek backpacking trip in June.  The Walkers reported that this was good experience and there was some talk of taking on the Enduro for next year.  If you have any interest in taking part in this trip in the future, Mitchell and Eric can give you some good information.  I would encourage more participation in this event.

Scout Pants:  We have some new scout pants for sale. There are 4 pairs of size 14 - 27”waist, 1 pair of size 10 – 25” waist, 1 pair of size 20 – 30” waist and 1 pair of size 22 – 31” waist.  Please see Ivan if you are interested.

Last but Not Least :   September is the Troop’s birthday!  We will be 60 years old having continually re-chartered since September of 1949.  That’s quite an accomplishment!  Happy Birthday Troop 29!

Rickett’s Glenn Campout:  On July 17th – 19th , the troop will be doing a campout at Rickett’s Glenn State Park .  The park is located in North Eastern PA and has some of the most magnificent scenery in the state and is well known for the numerous waterfalls located there.  This promises to be a memorable campout as we will be doing some day packing, swimming and some sightseeing.  We are looking for help with transportation and leadership  for this event. There will be a permission slip and more details emailed out and will also available at the next meeting.  Please see Dave Smith or Rob Snyder if you have any questions regarding the trip or accommodations in the area.

Congratulations! :

-          Steve Wolfe was presented the Indiana County Distinguished Citizen Award by Penn’s Woods Council at the William Penn Luncheon.

Donations Needed:  Brian Stancombe, an Eagle Scout and former ASM with Troop 29, is serving his 3rd tour of duty in Iraq. In his spare time, he enjoys working with the Iraqi children and helps organize soccer games.  He could use donations of small bags of hard candy, individual serving containers of Pringles, Slim Jims and hand wipes. If you can help out with some donations, the troop will see the items are shipped to him.  We will be collecting items during the month of June.  Please help if you can!

Summer Camp 2009

Schedule for the week 6/27/09 – 7/04/09

Saturday, 27 – Meet at the church at 9:00 to haul the Troop’s gear to camp. Trucks and bodies are needed. If we set the camp site up early It makes Sunday check-in a lot easier.

Sunday, 28 – We will be leaving the church at 1:00 pm for Summer Camp. With the amount of gear the scouts will be taking, you may need to transport your son and his gear to camp. Any bikes going to camp need to be taken there by their parents.

Wednesday, 1 – Family Night. The entire family is invited to come and visit the camp on Wednesday night. Please arrive no earlier than 5:00 pm. Bring a lawn chair, and comfortable shoes for walking all over camp seeing the sites. They are having family style chicken dinner for supper starting at 6:00 pm. The cost is usually $5.00. Please pay Don Shick on Sunday before leaving so he can make the reservations for you on Sunday during check-in. You can still come to visit without eating, or you can bring something from home to eat in camp. Just be careful, these scouts have been eating camp food for four days and may maul you over pizza. HAHA.

Saturday, 4 – Please plan on picking your scout up at 10:00 am at the basketball Court. We will be hauling the gear there to aid in checking out. If 10:00 isn’t good for some schedules, please make arrangements with other parents so your son gets picked up. It’ll be a LONG week and everyone will be wanting to get home.

Photos – They will be taking Troop photos again this year. It is a 5x7 and the cost is $5.00. Orders need to be made during check-in on Sunday. If you are interested in a photo please pay Don Shick Sunday before leaving the church.
